Types and Degrees of Burns
Burns, which can lead to hospitalization or even death, commonly occur by either ‘direct’ or ‘indirect’ contact with either a chemical agent; radiation; an electrical current, or heat.
There are Three Levels of Burns:
1 – First-degree burns generally affect only the outer layer of skin. They may cause serious pain, swelling and/or redness.
2 – Second-degree burns generally affect both the outer and underlying layer of skin. Symptoms tend to be pain, redness, swelling, and blistering.
3 – Third-degree burns affect the deep layers of skin. Sometimes referred to as full-thickness burns. Symptoms tend to be, along with pain, redness, swelling and blistering, but also redness, swelling and blistering, and white or blackened burned skin.
Those at risk for complications
Although complications can occur with any burn victim, those under the age of four (4) years-old and over the age of sixty (60) years-old tend to have a higher chance of complications and death from severe burns, because these age groups’ skin tends to be thinner.
